CLEY 12 Workshops Programme
WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS
SOLD OUT
10 Things to Do with an Etching Press (without using chemicals)
Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July, 10am-4pm
Tutor: Laurie Rudling
This weekend is a really brilliant introduction to printmaking and the many extra things which a simple press can add to your art. We shall cover: Monoprinting, Drypointing, Blind Embossing, Collagraph, Stencils and Masks, Sgraffitto Drawing, Carborundum Prints, Found Textures, Relief v Intaglio, Water v Oil Based Inks, and perhaps other hybrid methods and experiments. The course is very suitable for those looking to see what printmaking may offer their art. It may also be interesting to experienced printmakers who want some insight into non-traditional approaches.
It will also be relevant to those teaching in schools/colleges who want a range of “safe” techniques with intaglio.
You will need: apron or similar; simple drawing stuff, pencils, biros, a few crayons; old paint brushes (may be “spoiled” a little!); scissors; gum spreader/spatula; and a packed lunch. All materials and a little paper included in course fee. Extra papers charged at cost.

Pottery for Beginners
Saturday 14 July, 10am-4pm
Tutor: Dave Sturgess
This workshop is aimed at beginners but is open to anyone who would like to have a go at hand-building with clay. Techniques including slab work and pinch pottery will be demonstrated and some suggestions of things to make will be offered (e.g. a model house, vase, tile or plaque). If you come with your own ideas, that’s great – but think small! Things you make on the day can be fired for a small fee (collection or return by arrangement).

Looking Out, Looking Around You: Air and Aisle Poetry Workshop
Sunday 29 July, 10am-4pm
Tutor: Anna Reckin
A poem can work like a room (with a view?) or a passageway, or a walk by the sea. This workshop offers the opportunity to use the contained and open spaces of the Air and Aisle artworks as stimulus for new writing: drafts for poems or short pieces of prose. There’ll be time to explore some of the particular ways in which writers work creatively with and from the visual arts, but the main emphasis will be on your own writing, with suggestions for ways to use words to interact with the artworks, time to write and develop new work, and, if you wish, to share it.
Please bring with you a notebook and pen(s). Drawing is not required, but if you are so minded, you might like to bring some blank paper too, for rough sketches. We’ll be working outdoors as well as in, so please come in warm and weatherproof clothes and footgear.

Inspired by the exhibition and the unique landscape, architecture, heritage, wildlife and ecology of the area, these lucky students will explore printmaking and working with reed and natural materials, clay and fabric under the expert guidance of Jessica Perry, Tony Hoare, Liz McGowan, Jane Frost, Karen Steadman and Bev Broadhead.
