CLEY 12 AISLE AND AIR

5 July to 5 August

The North Norfolk Exhibition Project has brought the “Salthouse Exhibition” to Cley.

The 2012 manifestation invited artists, architects and designers to submit ideas for site specific works throughout the village of Cley.

During the month of July their works will be set amongst the superb architecture of St Margaret’s of Antioch medieval church, the snug environs of the village and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust coastal path, running enticingly between marsh and sea. These settings have provided a rich selection of themes for artists to respond to and thirty four exciting proposals have been selected from a long list of submissions; together with the usual programme of workshops, events, tours and talks.

For the thousands of visitors who annually flock to see this showcase of new contemporary Norfolk art, CLEY12 offers an expanded opportunity to experience an eclectic array of shape, form and colour in a range of mediums and settings, ranging across sculpture, ceramics, stone-carving, painting, photography, projection, sound, installation, camera obscura, textile and community crochet!

The very specific brief for the Coastal Path asked for installations on a theme of bird hides, whereas the Church offered a wider spectrum of possibilities, while Cley village will provide the unexpected and more domestic setting. Within the church artists have responded variously to both the architecture and the history of St. Margaret of Antioch. Pieces formed from natural materials, sourced from the local environment, such as Graham Johnson’s ten metre organic submarine or Stephanie Gilbert’s ‘felted architecture’ contrast sharply with Stephanie Douet’s gilded, life size, sculpted figure and Joy Pitts’ cloak of 10,000 labels

Visitors will need to explore the local environs to locate a range of exciting installations. To experience the magic of camera obscura in various guises, Hudson Architects’ soaring tower contrasting vividly with Ebbens and Swann’s ‘Victorian’ beach hut; or Jenske Dijkhuis’s prize winning Horizon Pavilion, relocated from the South Bank, London: illustrating his questioning of spatial awareness, it’s presence a primary step to establishing links with Holland.

Curator Isabel Vasseur has said “In this way “Aisle and Air” will demonstrate that art within public spaces has a unique and historic role illustrating the ever present creativity of all people at all times and all places and not just in galleries. On this special annual arts occasion in North Norfolk the art will have few walls but great ambition in both Aisle and Air.”

Salthouse 11: Ad Limina

7 July to 7 August

With Spring now firmly on its way comes the promise of Summer, days out on the North Norfolk Coast and the eagerly awaited annual Contemporary Arts event at Salthouse Church.

Brain Unravelled by Magi Boyd

Brain Unravelled Madi Boyd

Organised by the North Norfolk Exhibition Project, the 2011 exhibition promises to be another dazzling showcase of the best Contemporary Art Norfolk has to offer, all set in the most inspiring space. Held each year throughout July, the open-submission art exhibition has grown in reputation to become a significant event in the UK arts calendar with thousands of visitors flocking to the beautiful setting of St Nicholas Church, perched on the hillside, over-looking the dramatic North Norfolk salt-marshes. Open daily, visitors to this year’s show can experience an array of shape, form and colour in a range of mediums from painting through to installation and performance art. Curated by Laura Williams the 2011 title Ad Limina adds an edge to the work as the forty-five selected artists explore themes of threshold.

Making the most of the wonderful light entering through the large windows of the Church, Williams explains, ‘this years artists have produced an eclectic mix of works, made and displayed with the knowledge of the changing effects of light and shadow throughout the day’. Maxine Turner’s captivating ceramic pieces catch the viewer’s eye as they play with aspects of the space whilst by contrast Madi Boyd’s mesmerising work The Point of Perception sculpts light in the darkened tower via sculpture, light and digital media.

Throughout the show visitors are offered similarities and contrasts in the artworks. Pieces formed from natural materials such as the imposing bamboo sculpture by artist Nick Ball provides a sharp contrast to the hard steel sculptures by Pete Blunsden which in turn hold a deft conversation with the intriguing moving trees of Andrew Schuman’s installation.

Painting is well served in this years show with significant pieces by a diverse range of artists from the celebrated Maggi Hambling to the emerging talent of Alec Cumming.

Visitors are also offered the opportunity to engage with a full programme of workshops, run alongside the art exhibition, together with a number of special evening events.
