Poet Jehane Markham has been collaborating with pianist Robin Philips since they first performed together at Salthouse 2004. Tonight virtuoso double bass play Jonny Gee joins them to play The London Series. This unique poem/memoir looks back at a misspent youth in north London, as well as paying homage to favourite writers who have lived there.

Friday 13th July 2012 ANDY KIRKHAM AND SWINGBALL

Swingball at Cley 12

Norwich five piece band Swingball has recently been thrilling audiences with a vibrant mix of Eastern European, French and 1930’swing music. With a line up that includes accordion, sax, guitar, percussion and double bass, its repertoire ranges between wild, playful, passionate and soulful. The band’s programme for Cley 12 includes music from Duke Ellington, Čočeks from Serbia and scissor dances from Russia.

Sunday 22nd July 2012 HUGH LUPTON

Psalms from the Horses’ Mouth

This programme of words and music explores and celebrates the ancient relationship between man and horse. At the heart of the programme is the narrative poem « The Horses » a story that begins in eastern England a hundred years ago. It follows the life of Jenny Wing, a horseman’s daughter. The slow disappearance of the horse from the landscape mirrors her aspirations and disappointments in a lifetime that spans the most of twentieth century. The programme also includes poetry, song and humorous moving stories from the Celtic and Navajo traditions.

Saturday 28th July 2012 VOCALITY

Songs of Land and Sea

A celebration of nature in great vocal music from across time, including music by Victoria, Lassus, Finzi, Holst, Britten, Gershwin, Novello and the Beatles. Vocality is a group of experienced singers, based in north Norfolk. Formed in 2010, they are becoming well known for high musical quality and the infectious enjoyment of their performances. They sing an exciting range of unaccompanied music from classical to popular as well as new arrangements and pieces written especially for them.

Tickets will be available from mid May and can be bought from Tourist Information Offices in Wells, Holt, Sheringham and Cromer also on the door or via this website.

News

Saturday 28th January NNEP committee and Curator invited residents of Cley village to come to talk, in Cley Village Hall, about the exhibition planned for July 2012.
About 30 people turned up and Stephanie Gilbert (NNEP Chair) Ian Starsmore (NNEP Project Director) and Isabel Vasseur (Curator) addressed the meeting.
With excellent refreshments from Picnic Fayre, the meeting was jolly and good humoured and the outcome is that everyone wants to work together towards a superb NNEP 2012 contmporary exhibition.

Other News:

NNEP have been awarded a grant of £30,000, spread over three years (2011-2013), by Arts Council England and the National Lottery. We are all delighted, of course, and the NNEP committee says the grant gives them the stability to take time to plan and develop the project to bring high quality art activities to rural Norfolk..

We hope that you will take the opportunity provided by the site to comment on or respond to information on the site.

Salthouse 12 at Cley

The North Norfolk Exhibition Project committee (NNEP) invites artists and architects who are from or have a connection with Norfolk to submit ideas for their annual Open exhibition. The invitation will be for new works to be sited in and around the immediate vicinity of Cley Church during July 2012. The exhibition will be comprised of site specific, three dimensional works, which will be sensitive to and work with the architecture and daily use of the C14th century, St. Margaret of Antioch church which sits in the Glaven Valley in the village of Cley next the Sea.

There is also an additional opportunity to create new works for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s (NWT) land between the Salthouse car park to the East, Cley car park to the West, the shingle bank to the North and the bird sanctuary to the South. It is envisaged that this exciting new site and collaboration between the NNEP and the NWT will provide new opportunities for experimental, robust installations which will also be exceptionally sensitive to the habitat of the locality.

The Open exhibition has been held for 11 years at Salthouse Church where it has enjoyed great popularity with the public and enthusiastic participation of regional artists. It is felt that the exceptional light and space in Cley Church and the distinctive landscape of the coastal marshes guarantees that it will enjoy even greater popularity with both the public and the participating artists.

The 2012 exhibition will be selected and curated by Isabel Vasseur, working with the assistance of NNEP and NWT and with the support of Arts Council England, North Norfolk District Council, Norfolk County Council and sponsors.

An illustrated brief will be provided for all those who would like to submit proposals for the 2012 Open. It will describe the physical and thematic context, the timetable of the project and the assistance available to realise individual works. Completed proposals will need to be returned by 12th January 2012.

To obtain an art and architecture brief for the 2012 Open please contact NNEP at:

BRIEF FOR ARTISTS AND ARCHITECTS

for PROPOSALS FOR THE 2012 NNEP OPEN

1. Thank you for your response to the “Call to Artists” for the 2012 Open in North Norfolk. This brief will attempt to enlarge on the original description of the “Call to Artists”, specify the scope of the project and the means by which artists and architects can submit proposals.

There are two locations for the 2012 Open:

St Margaret of Antioch church Cley next Sea, parts of the churchyard and church land adjacent to it.

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) controlled, two mile shingle path which lies one mile from the church, running between the marshes and the sea’s edge between Cley and Salthouse.

It would be preferable if artists were familiar with this area of North Norfolk but it is not essential. It is however a condition that the submitting artist must demonstrate an association with Norfolk.

2. Cley Church and its Immediate Domain

2.1 Introduction:

Churches and Cathedrals have of late, hosted and embraced an enormous variety of art forms not for liturgical reasons but in such a way where they can be enjoyed for their own sake. On occasions it can just be because there is no other suitable building to perform or exhibit an exhibition in, but so often it seems to also be a mutual desire to celebrate the buildings and the human creativity which the church exemplifies.

The theme for the 2012 North Norfolk Open is to use the form of St Margaret of Antioch church as the very subject of the exhibition. The premise for the exhibition will be that it is entirely composed of works which are site specific. By definition this will mean that the majority of work will need to be three dimensional whilst eliminating the need for the church to imitate a gallery. We would particularly like to involve architects in this project either in partnership with artists or singularly.

The Church has also kindly made the land which surrounds the church available for installations of temporary work and these like those in the interior of the church should be extremely sensitive to their setting in both meaning and form.

2.2 Physical Context of Proposals for St. Margaret of Antioch Church

The main areas available are:

At the West end of the nave which includes the font there is floor space measuring 15m x 8m allowing for more than one standing work, depending on scale.

With the especially constructed frames 3 dimensional works can be suspended above the nave at 3.5m high (8m wide) or at either of the side aisles (5m wide) at the same height. Works should not weigh more than 250Kg or hang lower than 1.5m thus allowing room for people to walk below.

There is additional space for large scale 2 dimensional pieces in the spaces between the windows of the side aisles and the columns of the nave.

There are also small niches which once held statues of Saints or similar above the nave columns.

The areas outside the church include a small paddock to the South of the grave yard, encircled by a flint wall.

A ruined South Porch could be offered as an alternative location for three dimensional works.

3. The Cley to Salthouse Coastal Path

3.1 Introduction.

This location has been made available to the NNEP by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) and is the first partnership of this kind with these two organisations. It provides a particularly exciting opportunity for architects and also artists to respond to an exceptional and very beautiful landscape. The path runs between two conveniently placed car parks and can be reached from Cley beach road and by footpaths from Cley, Walsey Hills and Salthouse. It meanders between the man made shingle bank, there to keep the sea away from the marsh and water meadows and the turf, small ponds and inlets of the marshes. It has views of the great variety of birds that visit this site throughout the year and is within hearing and view of the North Sea a few meters away.

3.2 Theme

The challenge of this site is to design and build a temporary hide (as in bird hide) or even a den from the materials provided by the NWT which will consist of wood and reeds gathered from their numerous sites throughout Norfolk and wool, in its natural state, from NWT’s sheep. Those making proposals will need to be aware that the position of the installations will have to be agreed by NWT so as to avoid disturbing the wild life and those enjoying it and installations will have to be checked by a structural engineer for the soundness of the basic structure and tolerance to the weather conditions and the use of the public.

The illustrations below can be augmented by going to The Norfolk Wildlife Trust which provides further images of the area.

Looking west from the top of the shingle bank

N.B. It is hoped that this theme can be employed for outreach and education purposes where different communities will have an opportunity to build their own interpretation of a hide or den.

4. The Proposal

The proposal will take the form of:

Drawings or a collage of the basic idea with details of its scale, construction, where you imagine it will be located in one of the settings described in this brief and the means of installation.

Your understanding of the cost and your ability to cover it. As mentioned above the NWT can provide both reeds and timber from its extensive holdings throughout Norfolk, and wool from its sheep. Other in kind support is also being sought, and advice and assistance on applying for grants will be available.

Partnerships between a number of artists or a combination of artists and architects are encouraged.

The entire proposal should fit onto no more three pages of paper no larger than A1. The NNEP will not accept models at this stage.

It will be a great advantage if you are able to visit the two sites described.

It would be appropriate if you send copies of your originals and not the originals. In very exceptional cases, proposals will be returned if SAE sent.

Please enclose a non-returnable handling fee of £5. Cheques should be made out to North Norfolk Exhibition Project.

If you are in principal able or are interested in participating in the out reach and education programme please indicate this on your application.

NNEP was set up by local artists and is run by artists. Exhibiting artists and architects are expected to take responsibility for invigilation for two days, either by doing it themselves or finding someone who can substitute for them. There will be a number of volunteers available.

The deadline for proposals is 12th January. (NB: the date has been changed from the Call). Successful applicants will be invited to meet the Curator at the church on Sunday 19th February.

Contemporary Art Presented by the NNEP

Since its very first exhibition, the (voluntary) North Norfolk Exhibition Project (NNEP) has annually staged a curated month-long contemporary art exhibition in the beautiful setting of Salthouse Church.

Each year, those selected artists with a Norfolk connection have produced thought-provoking, exciting work; often inspired by and reflecting the local built and natural environment.

In the absence of a dedicated non-commercial gallery in North Norfolk, the Project plays an invaluable role in promoting contemporary visual art. The NNEP exhibitions are recognised as one of the County’s premier arts events.

Click here to view some excellent photographs of the Ad Limina opening on Mabon Llŷr’s Flicker pages, you may spot yourself or friends.

Curator, Laura Williams, is an art historian. In 2008 she established a gallery, Art 18/21, in Norwich’s medieval quarter. The gallery promotes fresh new work from around the world. She has selected the following Norfolk artists for the Salthouse 11 Art Exhibition in July:

Stained Glass Mosaic

Saturday 16 July, 10am-4pm

Tutor: Teri Lockton

Explore the magic and beauty of light and colour using glass. Because no technical expertise is necessary to make a stained glass mosaic panel, you can concentrate on the play of colour, shape and texture to create interesting patterns. There will be a vast array of small pieces of coloured glass from which to choose. The variety of glass, some with vivid colours and interesting textures, acts as a spur to your creativity. Often the shape of a piece of glass can be the inspiration for an entire design. The transformation which comes when the finished panel is held up to the light is a surprise and a joy.

Please wear old clothes!

Collagraph Printmaking Weekend

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July, 10am-4pm

Tutor: Laurie Rudling

This course will introduce you to making printing plates from collages. As well as normal art/craft materials we shall explore using found objects and textures and integrating these with traditional engraved line. Students will be introduced to the mysteries of intaglio printing of their plates on an etching press. We shall explore the vast possibilities of different inks, “wipes” and various papers. We shall use oil based etching inks but this will be within a solvent free approach to studio practice (no turps).

Please bring scissors, pencil, gum spreader, apron or similar overall. If you have an artistic agenda (!) some sketch or source material relating to it, otherwise motifs will be suggested. Plate making materials and inks are included in the fee but papers will be charged as used.

An experimental day in which participants have the opportunity let go their inhibitions, using their whole body movement and working on a large scale. A day that can be enjoyable for people at all levels of experience.

8 July to 8 August

The North Norfolk Exhibition Project was delighted to present the tenth annual exhibition of outstanding contemporary art in the unique venue of Salthouse Church; a Grade I listed, light-filled, fifteenth century church, overlooking the North Norfolk coastline.

Fabric of Life - Sally Lawford

The exhibition offered an innovative and diverse range of new work including ceramics, drawing, installation, painting, printmaking, sculpture, text and textiles by 41 artists with a Norfolk connection, including: Roger Ackling, Bob Catchpole, Susan Gunn, Vanessa Pooley, Gordon Senior and Dom Theobald.
The title ‘LANDMARK’ was chosen to celebrate the outstanding success of this artist-led Project, initiated twelve years ago, to provide a non-commercial exhibition space for contemporary art in North Norfolk.
In a departure from the normal ‘call to artists’ the participants in Salthouse10 were all committee members, past and present, together with their invited nominees. Of the 41 exhibiting artists, four exhibited in the first show in 2001, 14 were current committee members and 8 were past committee members. The current committee nominated 20 artists, 12 of whom have never shown previously at Salthouse.
Interpretation of the theme ‘LANDMARK’ provided the creative stimulus for a wealth of new artworks to celebrate and adorn this magical space, beloved by artists and art lovers – the antithesis of the white cube gallery.
Embracing the opportunity offered by Salthouse to extend their practice, highlights included: a soaring baldacchino (altar canopy) constructed from agricultural implements by Bob Catchpole; a six metre textile wall hanging created by Sally Lawford – a personal landmark inspired by a lifetime of life drawing, Stuart Shearer had recorded his daily commute, over the period of a year, in concertina sketch books; and Andrew Schumann had cast a serpent from 1000 ‘coke’ cans.

The exhibition also featured diverse responses to the local environment and landscape: Roger Ackling continued to capture sunlight through a magnifying glass, to painstakingly mark ‘found’ wood; Eleanor Wood responded reductively to the vast expanses of sky and land; whilst video artist Chris Loukes used the colour, pattern and rhythm of the land to raise questions of orientation.
In addition, the life and work of Kathleen McFarlane (1922-2008), one of the Project’s initiators, was celebrated by Porifera which has been generously loaned by Norwich Castle Museum.
Salthouse excels; a landmark exhibition; a visual feast; a showcase of a wealth of artistic creativity.
Salthouse Church, Cross Street
Curated by Ian Collins
Exhibition Dates: Thursday 3 July to Sunday 3 August 2008

LIGHThouse, SPIRIThouse celebrated a beacon building and its brilliant setting. The site-specific display of work by artists ranged across words, music, pictures, crafts, sculptures and light – taking in painting, print-making, drawing, collage, photography, textiles, stained glass, installations, mobiles, mirrors and models.

Following the opening by Sister Wendy Beckett, a record audience of over 9,000 people visited the month-long exhibition, with seven associated talks and recitals and 15 workshops. Many made return visits to see the SEAhouse LIGHThouse SPIRIThouse exhibition marking curator Ian Collins’ 30 years as an arts writer for the Eastern Daily Press.
From this year the popular project has been extended with a Salthouse Sculpture Trail running over ten miles of scenic countryside to Kelling Heath and Holt and featuring both temporary and permanent pieces.
As well as admiring work by 75 Norfolk-linked creative talents, the crowds spent more than £60,000 on artworks – aiding 25 artists, Salthouse church and the North Norfolk Exhibition Project. A much bigger sum was added to the local economy.

Collagraphs and Experimental Printmaking

An introduction to making intaglio prints from collaged plates. Collagraphs are the most experimental of print media and, in this two-day workshop, we shall discover many of the possibilities for rich, textural, intricate and colourful 3D prints. The weekend will also be a practical introduction to solvent-free practice.

Chris Hann
Multi-Viewpoint Drawing

Are you excited by drawing but looking for a new approach? Do you enjoy new challenges? This workshop will explore an alternative method of drawing related closely to Cubism,. It will take you on a journey from observation to abstraction and, at the same time, unlock the mysteries and prejudices that surround this important art movement. The results will lead to wider possibilities and ideas…

Felt Making

Felt is the oldest textile fabric; people learnt to make it even before they could spin, weave or knit, probably in the Bronze Age. Essentially felt is made today in the same way as over 2000 years ago. In this workshop you will make a number of pieces of felt using traditional methods, which can be made into items to wear or for the home. Please bring at least one old towel.

Nigel Skinner
Materials, Marks and “Making” Paintings

A mixed media workshop offering a chance to explore texture, surface, mark-making and the idea of “making” a painting. Participants will experiment with the nature and use of non-standard materials which are salvaged, recycled and natural such as sand and cement. Includes making paints from ash, dust and other pigments.

Carers Workshops

These three workshops have been specifically designed for people working in caring professions, whether with children, young people, older people or those with special care needs. These workshops will be inspirational and fun whilst providing creative skills and ideas that may be easily applied in the workplace and shared with your clients.
